Dean's involvement in the field of acoustics, noise and vibration began in 1980 in the latter stages of his engineering apprenticeship with a major industrial equipment manufacturer.

Whilst working in an acoustics laboratory environment over the next several years, Dean attained the Institute of Acoustic Diploma qualifications and became a Corporate Member of the Institute of Acoustics. Dean progressed to consultancy work in 1986 and completed his MSc degree in Environmental Acoustics at the South Bank University shortly afterwards.

Over the following ten years, he extended his experience in equipment noise testing and building services acoustics to include a broad range of subjects but his particular interests became industrial and environmental noise.

In 1997, Dean joined the Sharps Redmore Partnership. Today he advises clients on industrial noise, covering plant/process noise to the environment, employee noise exposure and personal injury (industrial deafness) claims. On the environmental front, Dean has developed particular expertise in the assessment and control of noise from mineral workings, landfill and waste disposal/recycling sites, waste transfer stations, green-waste operations and landfill gas control and power generating systems. Noise from civil engineering, construction and demolition contracts also form a high proportion of Dean's work.

Dean is an Affiliate of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and a Senior Noise Inspector with the Auto Cycle Union.
