Clive Bentley



Clive has two honours degrees: one in Science and the other in Environmental Health. He obtained his diploma in Acoustics in 1996 and since is member of a number of professional Institutions: all related to Environmental Science in one way or another. He is a Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Scientist and a qualified Environmental Health Practitioner.

Work history

Clive began work in 1986 in Health Physics at Dungeness Power Station. From there he moved to Cleveland Potash mine in North Yorkshire as the Senior Analyst. In both jobs he was involved with and took an interest in the assessment of environmental impacts and in 1992 he changed from poacher to gamekeeper and moved into environmental enforcement at Ipswich Borough Council. He spent 14 years there, ultimately running the Environmental Protection noise (and pollution) team before he left to join Sharps Redmore at the beginning of 2006. Clive was appointed an Associate in 2015.

Work experience

Clive specialises in environmental noise, dealing with planning, licensing, noise nuisance, rifle and shotgun noise and wind turbines and other sustainable technologies He has extensive expert witness experience (at planning appeals, licensing hearings and other court work: he is a Sweet and Maxwell checked expert) and routinely writes technical noise assessment reports and noise and vibration chapters for Environmental Statements. His work won the NAS Award for Innovation in Noise Control in 2009, he has presented talks and chaired conferences for EPUK, IOA and CIEH and was the author of technical paper on night time noise measurement.  He manages Sharps Redmore’s team which carrying out out the assessment of noise and vibration arising from the construction and operation of Sizewell C Power Station. He is passionate about the assessment of tranquillity.


Outside of work Clive enjoys oil painting, cooking, playing piano, drinking beer and spending time in the countryside. Any remaining spare time is spent on the Playstation, in the gym or learning Mandarin Chinese.
