BSC (Hons) MIOA MCIEH
Dan first studied BSc (Honours) Marine Biology at Bangor University in North Wales and used this knowledge in several years as a Government fisheries scientist. Later after a year-long trip round the world, and settling back working with a Local Authority, he attended Kings College London, completing another BSc (Honours) degree, this time in Environmental Health. Dan has since completed the IOA Certificate of competence in Environmental Noise Measurement, and his Diploma in Acoustics.
After paper rounds, and student summer jobs (including flower picking, turkey factory and fitting the ‘On’ buttons to TV sets), Dan’s first proper job was as a Fisheries Scientist for CEFAS. In this role he was fortunate to work on salmon and sea trout fisheries and ecology projects involving fieldwork in various UK locations spending time in and out of rivers. More recently Dan worked for 13 years within a Suffolk Local Authority. Initially this was as a Port Health Assistant at the Port of Felixstowe involved in imported food control. He was then sponsored to qualify as an Environmental Health Officer where he spent over 8 years working in an Environmental Protection Team gaining experience and expertise in areas such as land contamination, private water supplies, planning, premises licensing and noise nuisance. Dan then joined Sharps Redmore as a consultant in 2014.
As a qualified Environmental Health Officer, Dan has considerable experience of the local authority planning regime, domestic and commercial noise nuisance investigation and problem solving. He helped planning colleagues with noise related matters over the years including planning appeals and a public inquiry. He also attended licensing committees contributing to hearings and applying for premises licence reviews. Dan has worked on a variety of noise related projects including outdoor motorsports venues, concerts, carnivals, and traveller encampments. Since joining Sharps Redmore, Dan has worked on a variety of residential and commercial/industrial acoustics projects providing both noise and vibration assessment reports for clients to accompany their planning submissions to Local Authorities. He has experience with dealing with noise and vibration from road and rail sources and has recently been a member of a team working on a major national infrastructure project.
Dan is married with two boys and the whole family are sports mad. He met his wife at University where they both played hockey, and he has turned his hand to almost all sports over the years. A former county hockey player and runner, he has more or less retired from the former and now concentrates on running with his successful local club Framlingham Flyers for whom he is also a committee member. He’s now run seven marathons, recently switching from road to trail marathons around the country. His main motivation these days is to try and stay fit and fast enough to out run his children who are rapidly catching up with him!! Gradually more time is spent taking the boys to their various sports clubs and enjoying their achievements.
