Our Graduate Consultant Michael Welsh has completed his MSc in Audio Engineering at Leeds Beckett University and was awarded a Merit grade.
Michael was in the final stage of completing his masters when he joined Sharps Redmore in summer 2019.
Michael’s primary focus during his studies was in acoustics and this is where he tailored the majority of his projects to, undertaking research into lecture theatre acoustics for his final project. This project reviewed the acoustics of existing lecture theatres located in Leeds Beckett’s Headingley campus, and included undertaking site measurements, modelling the spaces and using modelling techniques and calculations to suggest methods of improving the acoustics of the spaces. The rationale for this project came from extended research into the impact of poor acoustics on academic performance as well as the engagement of students during lectures.
As part of his studies Michael also undertook a desktop study to determine the methods in which to convert a hall into a live performance area and a collaborative project with game audio and sound design students. This involved the creation of an interactive space-craft simulator which used a camera and Max-MSP to track the velocity and direction of a person’s movement within a space to control audio and panning of audio, as well as visuals on a screen.
