East Dulwich Picturehouse & café

This development is a 3 screen cinema and café operated by Picturehouse Cinemas. Sharps Redmore were employed by the team representing the operator of the cinema to help achieve a successful design.

As is typical of the sites operated by Picturehouse, this development came into being as the result of the refurbishment of an existing building. The desire to make the most of the architecture of the building meant that the historic timber roof trusses were to be left exposed, along with brickwork walls and existing glazing.

Sharps Redmore worked closely with the architect’s team to develop a design that achieved the operator’s requirements for internal acoustics, and to meet the challenging criterion provided by the local authority for the control of noise breakout from the operating auditoria.

Due to successful discussions with the local authority, and regular visits to site to check on the installation of the acoustic design, the commissioning testing demonstrated that the stringent acoustic requirements were met, allowing the operation of a cinema which is adjacent to a quiet residential area.
